As an actress, singer, and proud elitest, I am accustomed to the fact that people often confuse being loud with doing a good job (one need only turn on The Voice to witness this phenomenon). So in regards to Romney's performance at the debate Wednesday, I'd like to say for the record I. AM. NOT. IMPRESSED. He was loud, crazy-eyed, and forceful, sure. Frightened, but not impressed. Also detracting from my ability to be impressed is that I can hear words and know what they mean.
As a close follower of the campaign (this is like my football - people), my first frustration is that Mitt Romney straight up lied about things he'd previously asserted. Straight up. How does one debate a complete denial of reality? I'm reminded of the classic True Hollywood Story when Rick James slaps the shit out of Charlie Murphy and then, in his coke-haze, denies it two minutes later when Charlie hits him back:
RIck:...Why you hit me like that Charlie??
Charlie: Because you hit me!
Rick: That was three weeks ago!
Cocaine is a powerful drug. And so is whatever lie serum Mitt was on that would make him say things like 'President Obama doubled the debt.' (FYI he did not...unless adding is really subjective for you, like interpreting a poem).
BUT In addition to the lies and denial, he failed/was unable to outline a clear plan about any of his so called policies, beyond 'sitting down'. Sitting down with democrats, sitting down with the same economists that created his own healthcare plan in Mass that Obama is consulting with for his national plan, sitting down with the evil Obamacare death panels (aka Doctors) that decide who gets Robitusson and who will perish of Whooping Cough.
By contrast, Obama stated his plans cogently, with so much detail I admittedly worried people might get bored (because I know how much we're drawn to loud noises). Yes Obama made sense and his opponent did not, but why the calm, almost detached demeanor for Obama?
As a person of color AND a woman, I can attest that we're burdened with the task of speaking in sweet dulcet tones even when we're offended or defending ourselves. Otherwise, we run the risk of being seen as a militant Panther Nationalist Mau Mau, or a dangerous teenager in a hoodie.… WHY? Dunno. I can only speak anecdotally and say that something about having melanin makes people perceive your normal speaking voice as aggressive. And the only thing America hates and fears more than its 47% base of blood-sucking welfare queens is an Angry Black Man. Obama, Axelrod and the crew are aware of this and act accordingly.
Obama is smooth, cool, and collected. He'd never come out the gate swinging, and he didn't get to be president of Harvard Law Review, Constitutional Scholar, and now POTUS with aggressive, squinty-eyed attacks on his opponents. He fights smarter not louder. He deals in facts, sarcasm, and general sexiness. (Michelle no disrespect and Happy Anniversary). People who were expecting something else are forgetting the calm, deliberate guy they elected. And the fact that black people in power don't yell…because it's scary.
